Hugh was consecrated bishop of Lincoln in 1186.  His primary emblem is a white swan, in reference to the story of the swan of Stow which had a deep and lasting friendship with the saint, even guarding him while he slept.  The swan would follow him about, eat from his hand and would attack anyone else who came near Hugh.  The swan was his constant companion while he was at Lincoln.

The parish church of St. Hugh was designed by the architect Sir Basil Spence famous for his work on Coventry Cathedral.  The work was planned in two stages.  The first stage was completed in 1958.    This included the bell tower and the present worshipping area of the church which was designed for services and community events.  The building of the church as it was originally designed was never completed.

The cross on the top of the bell tower is in need of refurbishment.  This is one of the projects that we will need to attend to in the near future as the horizontal member is unfortunately corroded.  Look out for a new fund raising initiative to help restore the cross to its former glory.  We can see this as an opportunity to raise awareness among local people about the mission of the church to be a visible sign of God's glory.  Please contact us if you would like to support the work of restoration to this important landmark of our community.

Are you thinking about Baptism?  Baptism is the first step of an amazing journey of faith for your child and a special day for all your friends and family.

What is Baptism?  Baptism is another name for Christening.  It is a ceremony where water is poured over the child’s head three times, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Exploring more about what baptism means.  Your child is precious to you and to God.  You want the very best for your children and so does God.  You want them to make the right choices in life, for themselves and for others.  Baptism is just the beginning of this and so much more.  Over the years to come, it’s a journey you’ll share together with your child by:

Being there for your child to talk to about the bigger questions of life: questions about hope, faith and love.

Praying for your child.  Through the ups and downs of their faith journey.

Showing them practically how to make those good choices in life.

Helping them to learn more about their Christian faith, through their church and in other ways.

So it is a commitment to start as you mean to go on.  If you would like to discuss this further please contact us.

Thinking about marriage?  Today more than a quarter of all marriages in England between a man and a woman take place within a traditional setting of a Church of England church.  You are welcome to marry in church whatever your beliefs, whether or not you are baptised and whether or not you go to church.  Getting married is one of the most serious decisions that we make in life and we are here to offer help and advice.

Thank you for the music!

We are particularly blessed at St. Hugh’s to have such talented musicians who give us some of the best music in the area.  Music helps us to worship God.  It draws us into a relationship with God and each other.
